Ashurst: A New Forest Railway Village

Ashurst: A New Forest Railway Village 1789-1939 by Peter Roberts

It is unusual to be able to trace a village from its beginnings. Here it is possible because the land on which it was built was open common until the early 19th century. The Southampton to Dorchester railway line opened in 1847 provided the major reason for its founding. There were connections to the Forest which are explored as well as the origins and development of the New Forest 'Workhouse' established in 1838. The growth of a service community providing board and lodgings, as well as shops is traced.
