The Royal Oak, Ecchinswell (4.0m)
Leave the pub and go back towards Newbury, then just after
a phone box on the L, turn R onto a FP that bears L then R to join a track by a bridge over a stream. Follow the
track to the R for 150yds, then take a FP on the R that crosses fields and reaches a road (now just to the W
of the farm buildings, and not as on the map). Turn L on the road and shortly R onto a FP that rises at first
within an avenue of bushes and then rises further skirting a wood on the R. It then bears round to the R to
join the drive to Nuthanger Farm. Approach the farm, but bear L in front of it to join a FP downhill that comes
out on the lane by a smallholding with lots of fowls and ducks. Take the gravel track opposite into the Sydmonton
estate and follow this for 1000yds, turning R at a T junction onto another track that goes uphill past Watership
Farm. Then down to a crossroads where go forward on the metalled lane for 600yds and then turn R onto a track. In
another 500yds take the FP SO that brings you out onto the village recreation field, then the road, where turn
R for the pub.

About six miles from Newbury, take the A339(A34)S, then the A339 towards
Basingstoke. At the first roundabout on the A339, turn R (S) SP Ecchinswell and follow the lane for
three miles to find the pub on the L.
A well-used but sometimes noisy village pub that serves excellent and reasonably priced sandwiches and
home cooked bar meals. Usually a good selection of real beers.
