Henllys, or Hentlis, is a parish, to the west of the road leading from Newport to Pontypool, 4½ miles northwest from Newport, 10 south from Pontypool, 26 southwest from Monmouth and 2 north from Tydee station on the Western Valley section of the Great Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, Wentloog hundred, Newport petty sessional division, union and county court district, Newport rural deanery, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of local stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave and porch and a tower containing 3 bells: there are 130 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials date from 1765; marriages 1754. The living is a rectory, with Bettws vicarage annexed, tithe rent-charge £118,gross yearly value £80, with 50 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1877 by the Rev. David Roberts, who resides at 110,Stow Hill, Newport. The Baptist denomination have a place of worship erected in 1856 holding about 250 persons. Here is a colliery belonging to Patent Nut and Bolt Co, Limited of Cwmbran. Lady Llanover is lady of the manor and principal landowner. The chief crops are roots and some pasture land. The area is 2.622 acres; ratable value £2,466; and the population in 1881was 334.
