Henllis, is a parish and village some 4 miles from Newport, about two miles wide and four miles long. It extends in a north-western direction from the parish of Bettws, across Mynydd Twm Barlwm to Cwmcarn dingle, where it joins Mynyddyslwyn parish. It is bound on the south-west by the parishes of Bassaleg and Risca, and on the north-east by the parish of Llantarnam. This mountainous parish, with its far seeing beacon, embraces a large portion of the water-shed, and the whole of the water sources that supply Henllis and Bettws reservoirs, from which Newport derives its supply. It has one colliery. The parish of Bettws was attached to Henllis in 1877. Patron, the Lord Bishop of Llandaff. Waywarden and rector, David Roberts, 110 stow Hill, Newport. The church dedicated to St Mary, stands on the small eminence at the western extremity of the parish. Service on every Sunday at 11 a.m., except the last but one in the month, when it is held at 3p.m; on the last Sunday but one in the month two services are held, viz, at 3p.m. and at 6.30p.m. Area, 2,722 acres; rateable value, £2,499. Population 392; rectorial and vicarial tithes, £118; impropriated ditto, £33; glebe, 52 acres; Queen Anne's bounty £6
