Henllys, is a parish and village some 4 miles from Newport, on the Pontypool Road, in Monmouth division of the County. Newport petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural daenary of Newport, archdeaconary of Monmouth, Wentloog. It extends in a north-western direction from the parish of Bettws, across Mynydd Twm Barlwm to Cwmcarn dingle, where it joins Mynyddyslwyn parish. It is bounded on the south-west by the parishes of Bassaleg and Risca, and on the north-east by the parish of Llantarnam. This mountainous parish, with its far seeing beacon, embraces a large portion of the water-shed, and the whole of the water sources that supply Henllis and Bettws reservoirs, from which Newport derives its supply. It has one colliery. The parish of Bettws was attached to Henllis in 1877, and the present rector is the Rev D.Jesse Evans.

PLACES OF WORSHIP:--The church dedicated to St Peter, stands on the small eminence at the western extremity of the parish. The structure is an ancient building of local stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, and embattled western tower, containing 3 bells; there are 230 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from 1765, and marriages 1754. Services on alternate Sundays at 11a.m. and 6.30p.m.Churchwarden, Thomas Jones and Thomas Lloyd. Sexton, T.J.Lloyd.The Baptists have also a place of worship for 300.
