Disability Living Allowance

 Disability living allowance (DLA) is a non-means-tested, non-contributory benefit paid to a client aged under 65 years

(if you are not entitled to DLA because of age qualifications you may be able to claim attendance allowance.),

who has care and/or mobility needs as a result of a mental or physical disability.

It is tax free.

 

DLA is a benefit for the disabled person. It is not a benefit for the carer

 

DLA is made up of:-

a care component for help with

personal care needs;

and

a mobility component for help

with walking difficulties.

 

To qualify for DLA you must be

 

resident and present in the United Kingdom - and

meet the rules concerning age - and

not living in certain types of residential accommodation - and

meet the qualifying time period - and

have care and/or mobility needs

 

 

You can obtain a claim pack by either

obtaining forms DS704 or DS706 from your local Post Office or

 

from the web site www.dwp.gov.uk or

 

by telephoning the Benefits Enquiry Line (0800 882200)

 

 

Assistance in completing the claim can be obtained from local  agencies such as the Citizens Advice Bureau or by telephoning the local benefits Centre (0800 220674)
