Cope by Sir Ninian Comper

An exquisitely embroidered cope designed by one of the finest Victorian Gothic revival architects -Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960). As an architect Comper designed more than 15 churches, but the main focus of his work was in the design of interior furnishings and decoration in the Anglican and Catholic Church.

The cope has a red and gold brocade orphrey and morse, with five domed buttons covered in the same fabric at the centre back of the orphrey for attaching the hood. The ground fabric of the cope is cream silk damask embellished with appliqued and gold work eagles, interspersed with sunbursts and motifs of silk shaded leaves and flowers, outlined in gold thread. The embroidery is extremely beautiful.
