ANNOUNCEMENT
After nearly seven years serving as Vicar of this
parish, it is with considerable sadness to announce that Revd. Beverley
will be leaving St John’s to take up the position of Priest in Charge (and
Vicar Designate) of All Saints, Bingley in the Diocese of Bradford. The
licensing service at All Saints will take place on Saturday 28 April 2012 at
which the Right Reverend Nick Baines, Bishop of Bradford, will be
officiating.
Beverley’s last service
as Vicar of St John’s will be on Sunday 18 March 2012 at 10am. The
Churchwardens will be working closely with the Southwark Diocesan team
during the interregnum to ensure the parish life at St. John’s continues as
smoothly as possible until a successor is found.

All Welcome!
St John’s is a large building with room for everyone. We
especially welcome children of all ages. Sunday School takes place during
the 10am Mass in the Children's Room at the back of the Church. For those
too young for this, a Crèche area with toys is
provided allowing parents to attend to their needs and participate in the
service free from the concern that they may be disturbing others.
There are a few steps up to the main entrance, but we can arrange wheelchair access
through the North Door on request. Once inside, the main areas are fully
accessible. The sound system has a hearing aid loop
and large print hymn books are available. Coffee, tea and other refreshments are
available after the Sunday Mass and we hope that people will stay to meet other
members of the congregation and explore the building at their leisure.
The Church and Parish Hall are both available for hire for
concerts, etc by
contacting :The Vicar,
Beverley Mason
on 020 8653 0378. |

The church of St John the
Evangelist in Auckland Road, Upper Norwood is a Grade 2* listed
building and is one of the most important Victorian buildings in
South London. Under the guidance of the first vicar,
William La Trobe Bateman, it was designed by John Loughborough
Pearson, possibly the greatest ecclesiastical architect of the
Nineteenth century gothic revival. For old photos, the
plans and much more click on "History" above.
Upper Norwood lies a few miles to the north of Croydon. It
remains a leafy suburb despite the replacement of some of the large Victorian
houses with flats and smaller dwellings.
Throughout the century and a quarter of its existence, St John’s
has stood firmly in the Catholic “high church” tradition within the Church of
England. Music has always been a feature of the regular worship from the
time of the first organist
A J
Eyre, who was also official organist to the newly completed Crystal Palace
on the top of the nearby Sydenham Hill. In recent years this fine
building, with its cathedral-like acoustic and superb organ has become a popular
venue for concerts, recordings, television and radio broadcasts. |
