some time in the 30s or 40s. His name was Bertie (Hubert Joseph)OGDEN and he
lived as a child at 157 North Rd,Preston. My husband and I are coming to the
UK next Sept, 2000 and will be visiting the
area. I am keen to see if there is still the original house in North Rd. My
Dad died when I was only 6 and I have very little knowledge of him or his
background. He was born in 1898 and ran away to WW1 when he was only 16. His
occupation was mechanic when he was young.His parents were William and Mary.

I just surfed on in to see a view I haven't seen in four years, looking north
across the Ribble to Preston, you even got St. Walburg's steeple on the
left.I am an expat Prestonian and life long North End supporter, I was sad to
see them miss out on promotion, there's always next season. My parents,
George and Pat Cook live on Churchfield in Fulwood, they are both members of
Preston Golf Club, my mum Pat is the Lady Captain.If there are any
geneologists out there, my surname is Cook, my mum's maiden name is Wilkinson,
on my Grandmother's side (mum) the name was McKernan and on my dad's side,
Molyneaux. I know that one of the Molyneaux ancestor's, not sure of first
name, founded the Butchers shops at the Church Street end of Lancaster Rd
opposite the Miller Arcade or on the Stanley public house side. I
think your site is brill! I also enjoyed using the link to the River Ribble
site, I used to love fishing on the Ribble and the Lancaster Canal. I was a
member of Greenlands Labour Club Match Fishing section and I was Club
Champion in 1989 and 1990, great days. I moved to New Zealand in 1995, I live
in Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, North Island. The Mount is probably one of
the most beautiful places to live in NZ and the life style is excellent.

and at last have learned more about my father Arthur Langdale COWARD
born 14 March 1885 in Blackburn Lancs who went to Blackburn Grammar School
and Manchester Technical College(?) and served an engineering apprenticeship
at the Dick Kerr works in Preston. He had a mangled finger top joint due to
some industrial accident. He worked on the electric's for flying boats on the
Tyne at South Shields in WW1 before joining Highfield and Roger Smith
consulting electrical engineers in London; subsequently building Upper Boat
power station near Cardiff and later the consultant responsible from 1929 for
the grid scheme in the whole of the Midlands. Can you flesh out any details
about the flying boats please?

Great site!! First one I saw was Andrew Scott, (see message dated 23/3/99
below) I dont remember him but he knows lots of people I know and I have a
photo but dont know which one is him!! I was Judith Hobbs - Deepdale Primary/
Secondary 1949 - 1957 then "The Tech" ( Harris Secondary School).
Looking for Avril Baker (nee Talbot), Judith Wills - was a nurse at
Manchester, Linda Shave (nee Greenhalgh) was a photographer now into computer
software, I think, Beryl Chapman, dont know her married name. I also went to
St Pauls Church, Sunday School and Youth Club. I have been in New Zealand for
26 years and never been "home"! I am a Teacher Aide to students
with learning difficulties.

To anyone who knew me:-My name is Andrew Scott, born Preston 1943. I
attended Deepdale primary and Preston Grammar schools. My father was Frank
Scott, painter and decorator of Meadow street. I joined the RAF in 1961 at
the age of 17 and on leaving the air force migrated to Australia in 1970.
I've visited Preston several times over the years and stayed for three years
1980-83 living at Walmer Bridge. I played squash at Queens Mill and
Diners(Longton), but they don't exist anymore.I'd like to take this
opportunity of thanking everyone from my childhood and youth who made Preston
such a happy place for me, all except (but I forgive) Mr Forman the French
master at PGS for being such an arrogant =
pig. Does the PGSOB association still exist? Is The Old Black Bull on
Fishergate still as dangerous? Things have to change I suppose and the new
and future generations may think we are stupid for not enjoying hange but
boyhood memories are a funny thing, those long hot school holidays down by
the Ribble with the dragonflies skimming the water, the reflection of sun
setting over the bridge at Walton-le-Dale; that first kiss from your girl
friend at the St Pauls youth club; the lovely squishiness of wet Lancashire
mud as you get tackled on the school playing field; and last but not
least,the beautiful Preston schoolgirls of the late 1950's and early 60's.
Ah! I only wish I knew then.........

To anyone who may remember me.
I'm not a true Prestonian, despite having signed the International Preston
Guild scroll for 1972 [then resident in Toongabbie, near Sydney, NSW] and
1992 [residing then, as now, in New Plymouth, New Zealand].
I was born in Bradford, Yorks but when my Dad [Charles Park] was given the
chance to transfer from Bradford to Preston with the Traction Dept of the
English Electric Co to their Dick, Kerr works on Strand Road in 1947 he took
it. Thus I was born in Bradford and bred in Preston. Or, as a Mancunian
friend of mine once said of me, 'I'm neither a white rose or a red, I'm a
pink!'
Living in a house on the EECo estate at Lea [5 Nelson Crescent], when it came
time for me to leave St Andrew's School, Ashton in 1950 I went to Kirkham
Grammar School, our house was about 100 metres outside the borough boundary.
This was when I fell in love with the dear old Scout Motor Services of
Starchouse Square. The 'big red Ribble buses' [to quote my Sheffield relative
Uncle Albert] were all very well but who could not recall without a tear in
their eye the cream, maroon and black of the Scout? Of course I could wax
even more lyrical about Viking buses but not everyone lived on the
Woodplumpton side of town.
I almost inevitably went to an apprenticeship at English Electric in 1955, my
sister Diana, having gone there some three years before. I was fortunate to
be deferred from National Service because, to quote the words of the Minister
of National Service, my work was 'considered to be essential to the nation's
security', the EECo building aircraft, P1's and Canberra's in those days.
Within a fortnight of conscription coming to an end [31-12-60] I was at the
Royal Aircraft Establishment in
Farnborough, Hants, Having been for the job interview a few weeks earlier.
[Sorry Jack Duckett, It wasn't really for a family funeral I couldn't work
that Saturday morning.]
A sorrow at leaving Preston was cutting my ties with the Preston
Grasshoppers. It had become a mainstay in my life [only five minutes walk
from home when it was in Greavestown lane but ten minutes stagger back]. I'd
fallen in lust with a young lady just prior to leaving Preston to go to
Farnborough but, although playing the hard man, six months later I was 'up
north' again working for Rolls-Royce at their tiny factory in Barnoldswick.
The romance came to a natural end [I got drunk once too often] and with
months I was in the Merchant Navy on my way to New Zealand and other such
exotic places.
In October 1965 I met my wife, Sussex-born Sue, in Sydney NSW. We saw each
other for all of six days. Seven months later we became engaged in Hobart,
Tasmania and we married in W Sussex in January 1967.
We have two children,Rachel [born NSW 1972] and Stephen [born NZ 1974]. We
moved to NZ in 1973, becoming a bit sick of the Sydney rat-race. I had a few
jobs within NZ before eventually settling in New Plymouth in December 1979. I

brother on the occasion of her father's return to his home after many years
absence. The outbreak of war turned a vacation from the USA into a prolonged
stay since her father was a British citizen.

emigrating to New Zealand in 1995. I am married to my wife (obviously) Diana
(nee, Bradshaw), we have two children, Nathan and Verity and number three is
expected any day now, our very own Kiwi. I attended St. Gregory's Primary
School and St Thomas More High School from 1971-76. I left school and started
my four year Toolmaking apprenticeship with Ley-Press Tools (now Unit Press).
I worked for various Toolmaking companies around the Preston/Blackpool area
before joining Baxi Heating as a Production Engineer in 1986. I worked at
Baxi in the Engineering Support office, Sheetmetal Dept. until 1995. In my
spare time I used to enjoy riding and maintaining Scooters, I was a founder
member of Preston Penetrators Scooter Club, we had our meetings at the White
Hart on Watling Street Road. I also used to do a lot of fishing on the Ribble
and Lancaster Canal. I was a Punk Rocker and played drums with 'Pet
Semetary', I used to frequent the Warehouse/Clouds most weekends and spent a
short period in the summer of 1981 working the bar at the Dog and Partridge

I am the great-granddaughter of Robert and Isabella Gilmore Halshaw who
immigrated to the United States (Fall River, Mass.) around 1910. From what I
have been able to determine, Robert Halshaw lived in or near Darwen but was
born in Walton le Dale on June 13, 1873. His mother was Elizabeth Halshaw and
his father (I believe he may have adopted Robert) was Samuel
Scott Halshaw. I am also trying to determine the origin of the name (and if
there were variations of the name (e.g., alshaw, hallsall, halsall), as well
as where the Halshaws originally lived. I have searched the Internet and
found several references to Halshaw (i.e., Evans Halshaw Dealerships, Halshaw
Music, Halshaw-Moor-Pendlebury and the Farnworth/Halshaw-Moor
Railway Station). I am also doing research on the Robert Gilmore family who
appear to have lived in Lancashire in the 1800s.
I am planning to visit the Preston area within the year and your site is a

My father, Kenneth (Ken) was in the Preston Fire Brigade after WW@. Later he

residence was listed as "Back Lane" and their occupations,
"Travellers". I would be interested if anyone could tell me about
the occupations, and also about Back Lane (its' location in Preston). Their

I have recently begun working on my genealogy, taking over from my father who
has kept records for many years. The oldest record we have is of a John
Smith who was born in Stanbury, Parish Haworth, Yorkshire (don't know the
date). He then resided in Chaigley, Parish Mittion, Lancashire. He was
married to Ellen Kellett in Chaigley on 2-22-1688, and his parents are
listed as Joseph Smith and Ann. John sailed to America on the ship
"Britania" but died on the way and was buried at sea (we
know his will was dated July 29, 1699). His son, Robert Smith, born 4-29-1693
in Chaigley, did make it to America and fathered 9 children. Our
records are quite good from Robert Smith on to the present but before that we
have very little. I have been trying to locate where Chaigley is but
cannot find a map that shows it. The only mention I found of it was that it
is "a couple of miles due west of Clitheroe". When I found
your website about Preston I thought it might possibly be close enough
for you to be able to tell me something about the area my ancestors came
from. They were Quakers who came to the Philadelphia area, specifically
Bucks County PA. I am also planning to contact the Lancashire Records Office
to see if they can help me with my search for earlier relatives. Thank
you so much for your website, I especially enjoyed looking at the photos!

of the many "Smith" families, I would be glad to hear from

Service.Robert Service wrote many poems et al, re: the Gold Rush in Canada.
Since I grew up in Preston - (Robert Service was brought up there) I rashly

great grandmother was Mary Ann Hothersall. She married a WATSON. (don't know

I just came across this great site and want to say thanks for providing a
message board. My first job was in Preston. After leaving Wigan School Of Art
in 1979 I was an illustrator of childrens school work sheets at The
Curriculum Development Centre in Winckly Square . The cleaning lady Mrs,
Benjamin always had a nice cup of tea waiting for me when I got there in the

Hello, My 2-gr-grandparents left Preston about 1842-3 to migrate to the
U.S. I believe they had been converted by the early Mormon missionaries in
that area, but have very little information about them.
They were: Thomas RICHARDSON, born 18Feb1804 in Wigan,
died 03Nov1886, Richmond, Cache, Utah. His parents were Thomas RICHARDSON,
born
about 1778, and Jane THORNTON, born about 1782, both of Wigan.
In 1824-26 at Walton-le-Dale, the younger Thomas married
Mary MALLALIEU, born 05Oct1806 in Chorley, died 09Mar1846, Nauvoo, Hancock,
Illinois. Someone has given me her parents names as Benjamin and Mary, but I
have not yet been able to confirm that. My Thomas and Mary had the
following children while living in Preston: Jane (about 1830), Mary (about
1832), John (24Jul1834), Robert (20Dec1837), Susannah (Aug1838), Sarah (about
1839), Vilate/Violet
(07Oct1839), and Benjamin (about 1841). I believe that Jane, Sarah and
Benjamin may have died in infancy, but the others presumably migrated with
their parents, as all seem to have ended up in the Mormon settlements of
northern Utah and southern Idaho. After arriving in the U.S. Mary had her
ninth and final child, my
gr-grandfather, Thomas RICHARDSON, born 09Apr1844 at Crescent or Montrose,
Iowa, died 20Dec1924 at Inkom, Bannock, Idaho.
I would be ever so grateful for any information that anyone can provide on
my RICHARDSON-THORNTON-MALLALIEU family from Preston. Are there any others of
those names still living in the area that I might be able to contact
directly?

never returned home. We believe he joined the 58th Regiment known as the
Rutlandshire's.

I am a descendant of a certain Ralph Sumner, who had a son, Richard umner,
born about 1850, and a daughter name unknown who married a Webb, producing
six children, Ralph Sumner Webb, Doris Gertrude Webb, Mary Richmond Palmer,
William Webb, and two others whose names I do not have, but whose children
carried names Richard Webb, John Webb, Doris Reddish and Annie Hull.
I am told that Ralph Sumner was a butcher. Ralph Sumner Webb left Preston
about 1905 for Scotland, where he founded a family and I can lay my hands on
most of the history. Ralph Sumner had at least two sisters, Ann Livesey
(descendants Doris Louise Livesey, Harold Livesey, Pauline Corrocia and
Robert Livesey) and Martha Holt (descendant Martha Milner)
Ralph Sumner had a nephew John Edgar Sumner who died in 1953, a bachelor. I
understand that he was a brewer in the Preston area.
If any of your adherents have any knowledge of this family I should be
grateful to gather it as we are trying to trace a piece of our family
history.

grandfather, whom I remember fondly, was John Freeman Newsome of Phenix City,
Alabama, USA. I had never been able to trace my ancestry through him, not
knowing where he was born or any other information. I did know that he was
born on July 5, 1856. Then last week I found out about the Mormon Church
Genealogy web site and entered the information that I had. Starting from my
grandfather, they printed out a complete ancestral pedigree chart for sixteen
generations going from Alabama
to Georgia to Virginia in the USA, then to England ending with George Newsom,
born 1502 in Lancashire, England. Most of the English Newsoms were said to
be born in Newsom Hall, Lancashire, England. I wondered if you might have any
information about Newsom Hall or the Newsom family or any other pertinent
information. I have visited England three times and would love to come again,
especially since it appears that my family roots have been found. I would
love to visit your area. By the way the next generation down from George
Newsom is said to be John Newsam, born about 1523 of Newsam Hall,
Woodplumpton, Lancashire, England, and married to a Grace Preston about 1552.
I would assume that Grace Preston was from the family for whom the city of
Preston was named.

Thanks for such a great site- 4 of us from the USA are researching a
HOWARD family from Preston, most of whom emigrated to the New Bedford/Fall
River area of Massachusetts between 1880-1920. Your site has such great
information- it's nice to get to know about an area we have been researching
so much! I especially liked the picture which included St. Walburge's church-
our Howards attended that church, and many were baptised and married there.
I'd also like to see a photo of St. Augustine's, too. There's a rumer afoot
that my husband's great grandfather, Ben Howard, operated a pub in Preston in
the early 1900's, before he emigrated in 1910. When I find out what the name
of it was, I'll post back on here to see if anyone has ever heard of it!

months ago but never heard back from. I am working on lines that have common
names with those you are working on. Although we may or may not be
short-distance cousins, I am sure that given the same name associations, there
is a connection somewhere between here and Adam or Eve.

Norton line (5 generations with a few gaps here and there); and am seeking
information on the Davis line. The England contact would be the Buckland

Names: Davis, Blanche: Married to Amos Norton probably in New York or
Vermont. Amos is the son of Alfred Norton and Mina Bowen, born in Derby
County, Vermont. The family migrated down from Potton Quebec Canada and stem
from German descent (although I'm sure I'm as Italian as the next guy!). I
have much, much more on the Norton line if you'd like it.

my father's heritage. He was born in Preston in 1906. I really enjoyed seeing
the modern Preston. Would you by any chance have a picture of it about 1900
and would you put it on the web?
I found my great grandfather's family in the 1881 census and most of them
were working in the cotton mills you spoke of. They stayed there until 1917
when they came to America just in time for the big flu epidemic which killed
both my grandmother and her daughter.

I have information on ancestors by name of Milcah Toulmin whose daughter,
Margaret, married john Bradshaw who was related to a family by the name of
Henry Ormerod. Some of these people are apparently buried at "St.
Paul's" church in Preston. Their child Margaret Bradshaw (born 1822 in
Preston) married George Howarth (born 1818 in Lancashire). They emigrated to
America in 1842 where they had 10 children. Any information? Does St. Paul's
still exist?

Preston in 1847. His parents were Robert IRVING, Sr., and Ann AYRES. The
family came to the United States in 1849. Robert, Jr., became a master
plumber in the New York/New Jersey area, and was the contractor that
installed the plumbing at Ellis Island.

Hey, just thought I'd call in and read a bit about the town I'm going to
be working in.
One thing: call me an ignorant Widnesian if you will, but I'm sure that
there was a famous battle in Preston in 1715, when George I took steps to
quell the Jacobite uprising lead by the Stuart Old Pretender. I just thought
you'd like to mention it in the 'History' section, as even I knew a bit about
that one!
Anyway, nice to see that you have so much pride in your home town! I hope
I'm going to like it there!
