As well as the History and Geography master, “Sam” was Senior Sports Master and a founder member of the Welwyn Garden City Athletics Club.
There was never any doubt as to end of his geography lessons, his cane would be firmly pointed to “Cape Farewell” on the world map. ~ Ian Holt

Jim came to Sherrardswood in 1946 I think. It was the first time we had a staff member who was really active in helping the sports teams. I do not think it was an accident that the school's competitive position improved steadily thereafter, including beating the Grammar School home and away at football and a similar improvement in cricket performance was also achieved. Later, he proved a very effective spin bowler when the old boys had a cricket team and one whch actually beat WGC one year.
He was soft spoken and humorous but had a very well defined idea of standards and he was an enthusiastic volunteer. ~ Robin Mumford

Old Scholars will remember him well, not only for his geography teaching but also for the sports which he put so much extra time into organising. I still have my "medals" won at the school athletics club.
~ Di Bradshaw (Thompson)

I well remember him taking my shoe of with his 6ft cane when I wasn't paying attention, which was most of the time! ~ Anne Udell (Cooper)
