Aeroplane photos
Steve Carr:
Myself and two friends went to Duxford one Saturday late in June if memory serves me correctly.
We arrived early, and in time to see the fighters being towed out of the hangers.
We were disappointed to find out that there would
be no B-17 flying that day. B-17 "Mother & Country" had just had an engine
replaced following an engine failure, and it's own engine was still being
refitted to B-17 "Mary Alice". The days quiet was frequently interrupted by
test firing of "Sally B's" ball turret.
We were treated to the sight of the three 109's flying together, a sight I
haven't seen since. The five P-51's also flew, with "Aces High's" B-25
camera ship. I would have had more pictures except for a camera failure
after the first roll of film resulting in the second roll being completely
blank!
The two pictures of the OFMC's 109 attacking "Sally B" were taken the
following year at RAF Finningly while the aircraft still wore their film
paint schemes, 'though the 109 had a yellow cowling added by then. I've
included them because you don't normally see a 109 that close to a B-17 at
shows.
the following photos are all © Steve Carr. If you wish to reproduce them please contact me and I will pass on your enquiries to Steve.
