The Omagh Branch of the Northern Ireland Family History Society was formed in 1988 and its members meet locally from September to April each year on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss and promote the techniques of tracing ancestry and recording the family tree.  The more experienced genealogists in the group are available to give advice and guidance to beginners on how to commence their research and indicate where information resources are located to continue with their records.

Research by the group is carried out at the Local Studies section of the Western Education and Library Board Omagh Branch Library, and also at the Migration Studies Department of the Ulster American Folk Park which is situated a short distance from the town. Annual visits are arranged to Belfast and provide opportunity for further research at the Public Records Office (PRONI), as well as NIFHS Headquarters, and the Church of Latter Day Saints
