What's happening Monday? Next Exec Meeting |
![]() Who can join? Anyone! Network is open to all males and females aged 18-25, regardless of whether you have been in Scouts before. You'll find that some members have been in Scouts since Beavers, but just as many have not, so a lack of knot tying experience will not be held against you! ![]() What can I expect? Plenty of fun! If you join Network you'll meet lots of new and varied people, and have the chance to sample activities ranging from kayaking to grass sledging to raft building. It's not all rough and tumble though, other activities we have done recently are puppet making, ceramic painting and board games. ![]() How does it work? Unlike younger groups in the Scouting family, a Network unit does not have leaders attached to it and is run by its own members. Everyone shares responsibility for organising weekly activities, but Network units also have an executive committee, which oversees then running of the unit. The members of Network elect the Exec annually, and anyone is welcome to stand. The Exec consists of a chairman/chairchick, secretary, treasurer, PR .. whatever positions the unit feels it needs to run effectively! Members of the exec meet around once a month to deal with any matters that may arise. What do you do? The
weekly programme is based on the nine areas of the old Venture Scout award:
Activity, Community involvement, Creativity, Independence, International
Awareness, Leadership, Outdoors & Environment, Relationships & Values.
But this is the only restriction. It is up to the unit members to decide
what they want to do each week, and most activities you can think of will
fit into one area or another. It means that the programme is always varied
and you'll only repeat the activities you enjoy!
Is it just weekly meetings? No! There are also weekends away with the unit and larger county organised events, where you can meet people from other Network units. Each summer the unit also goes abroad for a fortnight, and in recent years has visited Portugal, Spain, Finland, Ireland and France. As with weekly activities, camps are organised by the unit, so where you want to visit next is up to you! ![]() Do I have to wear a uniform? We do have a uniform but it's not worn on a weekly basis. We only wear our uniforms on special occasions such as St Georges day; the rest of the time you can wear what you want. ![]() What happens next? Turn up and join in. We're all friendly and you'll soon feel at ease. Remember everybody was new once! |
