Herat Coarse weave & Ghiordes knot, usually large carpets
Khorassan Unusual elongated pear design, multi-weft crosses
Mesched Like Khorassan but unevenly clipped pile
Turkbuff Mostly room carpets, close cut and bright colours
SHIRAZ DISTRICT
Ispahan Often used, well known name but no longer makes rugs
Kirman Close weave, superior workmanship, distinctive red roses
Yezd Designs tend to be Medallions with floral patterns and corners
Bakhtiyari Tribal woven, vegetable dyes, coarse dull wools used
Shiraz Barber-pole sides, frequent designs are Pear & Chain Medallion
Niris Alternative warp threads depressed, otherwise District typical
FERAGHAN DISTRICT
Feraghan Coarse grain, Sehna Knot, very often Herati design
Hamadan Typical use of camel hair, Trellis & Daiper designs
Sarouk Slightly less superior grade of Kashan
Kashan Often misused name, this quality is seldom surpassed
Saraband Usually all over Pear designs, striped borders
Saltanabad Area of European influenced designs, scrolls, florals. (as below)
Mushkabad Also called Mahal, washed to tone down colours
Joshaghan Typically lack any distinctive features
Guilistan Kashan area, beautiful floral designs
Teheran Both knots used, mostly made in factories, like fine Tabriz designs
SEHNA DISTRICT ( or Adelan Province )
Sehna Single fine cotton weft between each row, elaborate Herati & Pear
Bijar Coarse weave, Ghiordes knot, boldly massed reds & blues
Kermanshah Light pink, blue & ivory shades, Sehna knot & coarse weave
Persian Khurdistan Nomadic, hard when new, very durable, usually dark colours
Karadja Finer, less lustrous wools used, usually duller and deeper piles
TABRIZ DISTRICT
Tabriz Close weave, buried thread with Ghiordes knot, Central medallion
Ghorevan Diamond shaped central medallions with stepped sides
Bakshis Rare in comparison with similar Herez carpets
Serapi Typical of Ghorevan and Herez.
Herez Mountain area, designs influenced by Mongolians
Suj-Bulak Made by Kurds, double wool yarns used, very serviceable
Karadagh Very often Caucasian designs used, replacing floral motifs
Afshar Nomadic, tribal type of Shiraz styles, Persian Floral designs
KHURDISTAN DISTRICT
Western Khurdistan Distinctive are shaded blues in Fields and simple Borders
Mosul Ghiordes knot, close coarse weave, often repetitive patterns
Gozene Warp threads encircled by right of some knots and left of others
