Rear lights are required in ALL evening events.
Check that you know exactly where to meet, and where the course goes to, turns and finishes.
This can be found by clicking HERE and selecting the relevant course.
1. Turn up at the venue about 1 hour before the start.
2. If the organiser is there, or as soon as he or she arrives, go and sign on pay your £1 and collect your race number.
3. Check how far away the start is so you can allow enough time to get there.
4. Get changed in to your Cycling kit and put you number on. (This is the difficult bit). IT SHOULD GO AS LOW AS POSSIBLE OVER YOUR BACKSIDE so that when in the prone racing position the finish time keeper can see it. He can't see it if it's halfway up your back, and you may not get a time.
5. Get your bike ready. THE OXONIAN, MID OXON AND OXFORD CITY CLUBS, REQUIRE A REAR LIGHT IN ALL EVENING EVENTS regardless of the conditions.
No light NO RIDE
6. Go and have a good warm up to get the blood circulating and your lungs working.
7. Arrive at the start with at least 3 minutes to spare. The timekeepers use the GMT time signal to set their watches. Don't be late!
If you're late, report immediately to the timekeeper, who will note how late you are and that will be your time penalty.
You will also have to wait until there is a gap in the field due to a non-starter, or the last rider has gone before you can start.
8. During your race, always obey the rules of the road.
Never ride with your head down.
Never take draft or slipstream another rider.
Always ride a straight line don’t weave about and keep to the left as far as possible.
When you cross the finish line, CALL YOUR NUMBER TO THE TIMEKEEPER, ease up, change to a lower gear, and keep going until your heart rate descends to a more normal level.
If you need to turn round to get back to the meeting point, or H.Q, dismount to cross the road. (Much safer when you're tired).
9. Back at the meeting point, get some warmer clothing on and take your number back.
The times will be available when the timekeeper returns.
10. Make a note of your time, the winner's name and time, the course No, and the date
Keep a record of these details, as you will need them when you enter an OPEN event.
