The Egyptian Calendar

The Egyptian year was split into three seasons - akhet (the innundation, which last from July 19th to November 16th), proyet (the emergence, which lasted from November 16th to February 14th), and shomu (basically summer, which lasted from 16th March to 13th July).  These seasons were based on the seasonal flooding on the Nile, reflecting the times of flood, planting and harvest.

The year was split up into twelve months of 30 days each - given a total of 360 days.  The months are as follows:

Thuthi July 19th - August 17th
Paopi August 18th - September 16th
HetHert September 17th - October 15th
Koiak October 16th - November 15th
Tybi November 16th - December 15th
Mechir December 16th - January 14th
Pamenot January 15th - February 14th
Parmutit February 14th - March 15th
Pachons March 16th - April 14th
Payni April 15th - May 14th
Epipi May 15th - June 13th

Five extra days were added each year to make it to 365 days - the so-called epagmoenal days.
