GREENWOOD CHAIR MAKING
All chairs are made from cleft oak or ash,
usually coppiced locally and therefore a
renewable and sustainable source.

The wood is worked green (i.e. fresh cut)
then fully seasoned for at least 6 months
before final assembly.

Only traditional tools and methods are used,
and natural bends are selected for back posts
and arms.

Some parts are steam bent. Round sections
are turned on a pole lathe and octagonals are
draw-knived and spoke-shaved before
finishing with a scraper and sandpaper.
Most chairs are suitable for upholstery as
well as various woven seatings, including
rush, cord, willow and seagrass.

The wood finish is normally oil and beeswax,
though some chairs are stained or treated
with dark wax for a more traditional
appearance.
