The Essay for the Friends No. 4 on Troyte has caused some interest among bibliophiles and I should like to thank those who have taken the time and trouble to contact me about it. While it was hoped that the Essay was comprehensive, yet more variants have turned up, some of a more substantial nature than others. Thus an example of the first edition (page 7 in Essay) has been found where there is a misprint in the underlining of the title (Fig 1). It is inevitably the fourth edition where more variants have been found. Two more versions of the title page given on page 11 in the Essay have been reported. Both of these (Figs 2 & 3) have differences in the spacing and punctuation on the title page but, more importantly, the text includes the Preface and Notes to the second and third editions. In the variant of the fourth edition where the quotation marks for Lyra Innocentium are not closed (page 12), a further version has been found (Fig 4). In this, the number of the premises of Wells Gardner, Darton & Co. in Paternoster Buildings is given. Evidence from the different editions of Ropesight indicates that the firm moved from No 2 to No 3 Paternoster Buildings in the late 1890s - or the numbering was changed - and the number given (3 & 4) indicates that this printing was after the move, in line with the date suggested previously.
Of the latest reprinting of the fourth edition, a variant has been recorded where the number of the edition has been omitted (Fig 5). This particular copy was given as a present at Christmas 1932. It has also been pointed out that while the title page of the six-bell version of the first variant of the fourth edition is identical to that of the eight-bell version, its printed paper cover is not quite identical, the quotation starting E'er ... rather than Ever .... I would be very pleased to hear of other six-bell versions to establish if this is the usual outer cover.
My thanks go to Roger Barnes, Tony Smith and Fraser Clift for the information that is embodied in this supplement.
