This history is written in three sections. "A long, long time ago" gives the potted history of the Pencoed area from geological times to the Ice Age. "Not so long ago" is the story of the area from the age of the cavemen to the Norman invaders. "More recent times" tells of the time from the Norman invasion through the days when "Coal was King" to the present time.
For those who are interested in digging a little deeper into the past, you can do no better than read these two volumes. If you can't buy copies, there are copies available on loan from the Pencoed Library
In the 1990's, Sue and Walter King published two very fine books tracing the history of Pencoed ("Pencoed Past", Vol. 1 and 2). There may still be some copies for sale but there reference copies held by Pencoed Library. These are worth reading to get a full flavour of the town's recent and not so recent history.
