A farmer dies, he has three sons, John, Fred, and Rupert. He also has 17 horses. In his will he leaves the horses to his sons, one half of the total horses to John, one third of the total horses to Fred, and one ninth of the total horses to Rupert. The sons are scratching their heads trying to work it out, when up rides the blacksmith on his horse, the sons tell him of their problem, “ that’s easy” says the blacksmith. How does he do it ?. A man is walking through a train tunnel, when he is a quarter of the way into the tunnel, he looks back, and see’s a train coming. If he runs back to the beginning of the tunnel, he will get there at same time as the train. If he runs forward to the far end of the tunnel, he will get there at the same time as the train. He runs at 10 miles per hour, he doesn’t know how long the tunnel is, or how far away the train is when he see’s it…. What is the speed of the train ?.

Day trippers
When some day trippers started off on their annual seaside trip, each minibus carried exactly the same number of people. Half way there, 10 minibuses broke down, so each remaining minibus carried one more person.
On the way back, 15 more minibuses broke down, so there were 3 more people in each minibus than when they started out in the morning.
How many people went to the seaside and in how many minibuses?


100 METERS RACE

Two brothers decide to have a 100 mtr race. The older brother wins the race by 3 mtrs.
They decide to have another race with the older brother handicapped, so the older brother starts 3 mtrs. further back. They both run at the same speed as they did in the first race. Who wins the second race?


FLUID

There are two, 2 litre glasses. One glass contains 1ltr of red fluid, the other contains 1ltr of yellow fluid. You take 1 large spoonful ( one tenth of a litre ) of fluid out of the red glass, and pour it into the yellow glass. You then take 1 spoonfull ( one tenth of a litre ) of fluid out of the yellow glass ( which now contains some red fluid ) and pour it into the red glass.
Does the red glass contain more yellow fluid than the yellow glass contains red fluid, or is it the other way round, or are they the same.

RAFFLE

There was a raffle, where people received different coloured tickets in a sealed envelope. Those that got a Red ticket won £100. Those that got a Blue ticket won £75.
There was a total of 1260 winning tickets.
Only a quarter of the Red ticket winners collected their winnings

THE BIRDS AND THE TREES

One evening some crows come to roost in some trees in a field.
The crows spread out, so there are the same amount of birds in each tree.
There are between 200 and 300 birds.
The answer is such, that there can be only 1 possible combination to the answer.

PIGGY BANK

A piggy bank contains £20.41. It is made up of four different denominations of coin and the largest denomination is £1. There is the same number of each coin. How many of each coin is there, and what are their denominations.


SQUARE FLOOR

There is a square floor, tiled with square tiles, ( no broken or part tiles ).
A man comes along, lifts all the tiles and stacks them in a pile, he adds 100 square tiles of the same size to the pile, and uses them all to tile another square floor. How many tiles were used to tile the new floor.

FLIGHT

A pilot travels from one airport to another. If he flies at an average speed of 300 mph. He arrives at his destination 1 hour early. If he flies at an average speed of 200 mph. He arrives 1 hour late.
What is the distance of his journey.
What would be his average speed, to arrive on time.
