Suzanne Connolly and Caroline Sakai will be leaving for Rwanda April
27 and will be there for 3-4 weeks. They are planning to do a
randomized controlled study with about 200 genocide survivors. The
TFT treatments will be provided by Rwandan pastors, teachers,
and community leaders who will be trained at the algorithm level.
Participants will be assessed with the Modified PTSD Symptom Scale
and the Traumatic Symptom Inventory, which have been translated into
Kinyarwanda. They will be randomized into a TFT treatment group,
and a wait list control group. Suzanne and Caroline will supervise
the treatments and assist if needed. Both groups will have another
assessment with both instruments a week after the treatment group
has their TFT treatment for traumas. For the control group this
will be a second baseline assessment. The control group will
subsequently have the TFT treatment followed a week later by a
post-test. The ATFT Foundation has
hired an independent researcher from Arizona State University who
specializes in trauma research to design, supervise, run the
statistics for and prepare the research study for publication in a
major professional journal. Thanks to all who have
contributed to making this research mission possible!
They will also do other training, including an
abbreviated Diagnostic CT-TFT training of pastors, teachers, and
community leaders who have completed the algorithm training. They
are planning also to introduce TFT at another orphanage, as well as
stop by El Shaddai, the orphanage we were at in the previous two
years. They will also be sharing TFT with other agencies in Rwanda.
