BROWNEDGE BRASS BAND
A report in the Preston Guardian of the 14th June 1851 tells us
that "At Brownedge the BROWNEDGE BAND performed in full uniform."
Reference is made here and in 1853 and 1854 to the BROWNEDGE BAND of Mr. John Walker. The Slater's Directory for Preston, 1851, lists a
Mr. John Walker of Brownedge under "Nobility, Gentry and Clergy. (Page 427). The Census Returns for 1851 show that at "Brownedge", an address given for a number of dwellings, there was a Thomas Walker shown, aged 29 and born in Blackburn, as head of the household. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Clergy. Living with him at the time were his mother Elizabeth, born in Leyland now aged 65, who was shown as a "retired tobacco manufacturer" and also his brother John, aged 32 and born in Blackburn, who was also shown as a "retired tobacco manufacturer".
As Mr. Walker "consented to give the services of his band" at the Catholic Ball in 1853 it seems reasonable to assume that the two
Mr. Walkers are the same person. Gillibank's Directory for Preston, page 28, shows a
Mr. John Walker at 8, Bank Parade. As he too is listed under Clergy and Gentry and those retired from business this is probably him again.
