PRESTON TEMPERANCE BRASS BAND

The band with the formal title of Preston Temperance Brass Band was formed in 1875 according to the report below published in the Preston Guardian on the 2nd March 1907 but the Temperance Movement provided bands of music from a much earlier date. The British Temperance Conference took place in Preston on the 5th July 1836 and is was reported that  in the evening "the meeting was rendered highly interesting by the assistance of The Society's Band" and in May that same year the  Friendly Societies paraded headed by their respective bands. The Temperance Society parade included THE TEE TOTAL BAND who later played from the hotel to the theatre. What form this band took is unknown and it might have been other than a brass band.
