Compositions of Bristol Surprise Major
Scoring formula:
I award my peals a
'points' score using the following formula:
Total CRU’s [144 max]
+ Total 4bell Lbru’s
+ Total 5bell Lbru’s [x2]
+ 5 points each of Queens, Tittums, Whittingtons, Kings
+ total 2468’s at the back [24 max]
So, potential maximum is 490+

Using the same method of scoring, I analysed two excellent peals,
one by Stuart Hutchieson, and
one by David Hull, in order to give some
kind of gauge for my peals.
My highest scoring peal of Bristol to date is No 13, a 5122 which has a decent
number of cru's [118], but has a large number of little bell roll ups.
In time, I am hoping to develop a more accurate way of scoring, including
rollups on the front, 7468's, 7568's, 8765's etc - because my current
formula for scoring peals of Bristol is partially flawed. Firstly it takes in to
account 4 and 5 consecutive little bell roll ups, but, for instance if we had
100 4b lbru, and 50 5b lbru, there are only 50 4b lbru that are individual from
the 5b lbru's. Consequently my formula awards 200 'points' for this little bell
music - when there are only 100 individual little bell roll ups - 50 5 bell, and
50 4 bell. Another flaw of my formula is that it doesn't take in to account
other typically split tenors musical changes such as 7468's, 7568's, 8765's at
the back etc. Click here to view a revised
draft of a formula for scoring peals of Bristol.
However, the scores above still give a fair idea of the quality of the music in
the peals below, compared to peals by other composers.
