Cockermouth Harmonic Society is a music society dedicated to the furtherance of the choral music tradition within West Cumbria. An SATB choir with approximately 50 voices covering an age range from 20 to over 80, the society rehearses every Monday evening in the United Reformed Church in Cockermouth during term time and gives at least two concerts each year. The society also takes part in events at Carlisle Cathedral.
Cockermouth itself is a market town with a population of about 8000. It lies 8 miles inland from the West Cumbrian coast, and forms an important part of the Borough of Allerdale and of the Parliamentary Constituency of Workington. The town is also one of Great Britain's 51 "gem" towns as defined by the Council for British Architecture and is steeped in history. As well as the Harmonic Society, Cockermouth supports the Castlegate Singers, a flourishing Music Society, a Civic Trust and other bodies.
