Sample Aid

Overview

This tool generates a sequence of MIDI notes with a specified range of pitch & velocity steps. The sequence can be single-stepped, played once or played continuously, providing an accurate & repeatable source of MIDI notes. The intended uses are for triggering a sound source for sampling, and for auditioning or comparing sample-based synths for sampling anomalies.

Auditioning

The audition sequence can be used to drive any sample-based sound module with a set of pitch/velocity variations while listening for sampling anomalies, e.g. if insufficient notes have been sampled, there may be audible jumps in timbre between sampled and interpolated notes. Similarly for samples taken at different velocities. This sequence runs faster than the sampling sequence so you can scan through large ranges quickly, and values can be adjusted on-the-fly to home in on any anomalies.

Sampling

The sampling sequence can be used to drive a target sound source with an ordered set of pitch/velocity combinations for sampling, e.g. for increasing the polyphony of a hardware or software synth. This sequence runs slower than the audition sequence to allow time to arm and place each sample as reqd.

The tool offers several advantages over manual triggering from a keyboard, especially if there are lots of samples or you need to sample at different velocities:-

Minimum system requirements

Windows XP and later.
Tested on XP, Vista, & Windows 7.

Downloads

Please note the Sample Aid tool lives inside Sequetron, so it is not a separate program. You install Sample Aid by downloading and installing Sequetron LE, then use Sequetron's menus to start the Sample Aid tool - exact details are in the Installing section below. Sample Aid is fully functional in both the LE and Full versions of Sequetron. The LE version is free, but if you pass it on please keep the package intact.

Of course, once you've captured your samples using Sample Aid, Sequetron is at hand to drive the sampler and help create something amazing with them ;)
