"All you need to make a film is a girl and a gun" - Jean-Luc Godard
This is Girls with Guns, a fan
site dedicated to movie heroines, female killers, and other dangerous
ladies of the screen, in cinema and TV. They don't need rescuing, and they prefer to leave all that
screaming business to their enemies and victims. These women have attitude... and they're armed. The
currently popular phenomenon of girls & guns did not start with Sigourney Weaver's
'Ripley' - though, admittedly, the American actress's
recurring role as the ET-bashing heroine of the Alien movie saga has proved influential in
Hollywood, particularly upon mainstream action cinema of the last decade.
"I wanna' pistol in my hand" - Polly Jean Harvey [from Big Exit]
Consequently, there are more women toting guns in the movies than ever, and we are
all in favour of it! Why should the likes of Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and
Chow Yun-fat have all the fun? Drew Barrymore, Jamie Lee Curtis, Geena Davis, Jodie Foster, Linda
Hamilton, Demi Moore, Rene Russo, Kathleen Turner, and Michelle Yeoh (to name but a few) can handle
stunt gunfights, too, and star in choreographed shoot 'em-ups that are just as exciting as anything
the guys can do. Female empowerment, or simply traditional role reversal? Gender displacement for the
ultimate phallic symbol, bringing a new focus for the male gaze, or just familiar action fantasy
entertainment with only one relatively minor difference?
"Don't call me babe!" - Pamela Anderson [in Barb Wire]
Girls with Guns contains no nudity or swear
words. It's just for fun, ok? If you enjoy browsing this website (and finding all the extra
features), and you want to contribute further entries about your favourite action girls, please write
in with your suggestions.
