James Wood was born on 7 February 1830.1 He was the son of William Wood and Isabella Falconer. James Wood was baptized on 15 February 1830 at Parish of Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland.1 His family was known by the tee-name of "Woods". He was a fisherman. He married Helen Sclater at Free Church School of Portknockie, District of Seafield, Banffshire, Scotland, on 2 February 1856.2,3 He was the informant for William Wood's death at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 16 September 1876.4
