Alexander Mair was born on 12 August 1818 at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of William Mair and Margaret Smith. Alexander Mair was baptized on 16 August 1818 at Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland.1 His family was known by the tee-name of "Shavie". Alexander Mair (b.1818) was originally a Mair "Shavie", but was very cheeky as a child and so became the original Mair "Saucy."2 He was a fisherman.
