     William Mair was born on 28 June 1872 at Parish of Seafield, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of George Mair and Euphemia Pirie. His family was known by the tee-name of "Shanker".
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1881 census at 4 Fountain Street, Banff, Banffshire, Scotland. William Mair was a fisherman. He served in the crew of the Zulu fishing boat 'Evangeline' BF 1952.

He married Margaret Jane Wood at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 6 December 1901.4 William died on 17 January 1905 at sea off Griceness, Stronsay, Orkney, Scotland, at age 32. He perished with the Portknockie Zulu fishing boat 'Evangeline' BF 1952 that was wrecked off Stronsay during a great storm. The entire crew were lost. They were David Wood "King" (skipper), John Wood "King", Alexander Mair "Shavie", James Mair "Shanker", William Mair "Shanker", Joseph Mair "Bobbin", Alexander Mair "Bobbin" and George Findlay.5 He was buried on 21 January 1905 at Hillhead Cemetery, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.
