     William Mair was born on 16 July 1871 at Seagate, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of William Mair and Ann Mair. His family was known by the tee-name of "Shavie" or "Shavie Watt". William Mair was known as 'Billy Watt.3' William Mair was a fisherman. He married Jessie Ann Strachan at Seafield Church, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 10 December 1897.2 He was the informant for James Strachan Mair's birth at 314 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 21 November 1900.4,2 From 1919, William Mair, John Wood and W. Pirie owned the steam drifter 'Lively' BF 262.5 The Buckie and District Directory for 1925 shows that William Mair lived at 16 Station Street, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.6 The Buckie and District Directory for 1925 shows that William Mair and others owned the steam drifter BF 262 Lively.7
William died on 10 August 1938 at sea, 6 miles WNW Of Dunnet Head, in the Pentland Firth, Scotland, at age 67. William Mair "Shavie" drowned when the drifter 'Arradoul' BCK 127 collided with the trawler 'Rosskeen' off Dunnet Head in dense fog and sank. Seven of her crew were picked up by the trawler but the remaining 4 were drowned.2
