     James Slater was born on 9 December 1868 at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of Alexander Sclater and Helen Mair. His family was known by the tee-name of "Mash". James Slater was a fisherman. He married Helen Slater at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 7 December 1894.2
