Russell was born at Kenninghall, Norfolk, England, on 12 August 1918. He was the son of James Lanchester and Frances Maria Briggs. Russell never married. Russell died on 15 May 2009 at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Colney Lane, Norwich, Norfolk, England, at age 90.1 He was buried on 27 May 2009 at Wymondham Cemetery, Cemetery Lane, Wymondham, Norfolk, England.1
