Top Secret RAF Radio outstation
After the success last year of our Local History evening when we were joined
by many past residents of the village, we are holding another event
which will be centred on the Top Secret RAF Radio outstation,
responsible for ground systems during the Second World War which was
sited in the village.
With Ashmansworth being the Head office for the whole of the Southern Region
it would have been a hive of activity during the war years. With
extra people to support billets had to be found for the personnel,
which was no easy task as many people were reluctant to share their
homes with strangers. The mammoth task fell to the Local Invasion
Committee to sort out.
The Local Invasion Committee was responsible for the smooth running of both
Ashmansworth and Crux Easton villages and it fell to them to
organise food supply, first aid and defence measures in the event of
an invasion.
I am sure you have all heard of “Dads Army” and we are proud to say that we
had a fully fledged force, consisting of men and boys from both
villages.
Picture the scene, the pub bursting at the seams with service personnel from
both the RAF and the Army, one lot based at the bottom of the
village and the other at the top. I wonder how many fights there
were, though I am told that both crews got on quite well.
The locals unfazed, in the blackout as it’s always pitch black in this area
even now. They probably enjoyed more light from surrounding search
lights probing the skies for enemy planes, than they had ever known
before.
So if you’re interested to hear more about Local History during the war, why
not come along and join us on the evening of Saturday 14th
July 2007 or make a day of it, taking in some of my historical
walks.
During the evening there will be a raffle in aid of The Macmillan Nurses and
to cover costs of rations. We hope you can join us for what will be
a truly interesting evening Uniform Optional!!
