About me...

My Name is Emily Butler and I have kept rats on and off for the past 15 years. I am a post graduate student in Applied Animal Behaviour and training and have always loved animals.

 Unlike many who's children got them into rats, it was actually the other way round for me. My Dad had heard how intelligent rats were and one day while my Mum was in the hair dressers we snook out and got our first pair of boys - Rolland and George. Although initially not very keen my Mum soon grew to love them and my obsession with rats took off.  Since my first boys I have had many many more. Gaining experience with unplanned litters, dabbling in showing, breeding, housing large groups, dealing with very nervous rats and castrated males as well as integrating them strongly into my degree work.

I created Podels back in 2001 as a tribute to the lovely rats I owned at the time, to rats as fantastic pets in general and to help share my knowledge and point people in the right direction for information on the web. Since then it has developed into a large site covering other rodents, but for me it is still all about the rats!
