All the flags of nations are arranged in order of pattern, as at left, and within each group, representing a pattern category, by colours.

In each group by pattern (as shown at left), flags are arranged in the order of basic colours (from white to black, as shown in the colour strips) and in order of shape priority from left to right, top to bottom, of the main coloured areas of each flag. Colours of devices in areas are taken into account only where those are the only distinguishing feature between two flags — such as in the flags of Montenegro and Morocco, where the entire flag is red except for the device and the chief colour of the respective devices are yellow and green, so Morocco comes second of the two. Note that very thin stripes are generally ignored; thus, the narrow yellow or gold border of the flag of Montenegro is ignored, as are the gold stripes bordering the central diagonal black stripe in the flags of Saint Kitts and Nevis and of Tanzania, for the purpose of this page.
