Diatom Campylodiscus clypeus

The diatom Campylodiscus clypeus from Breydon, Norfolk

Diatoms are microscopic algae with shells made out of silica and come in a wide variety of shapes. Campylodiscus is another circular form which is curled slightly like a potato crisp. There is a broad outer annulus of radial ridges with two elongated areas of dots in the centre of the disc. Drawn from a slide prepared by Fred Kitton and included in a PMS box made by Brian Darnton. For the Balsam Post, issue 25, October 1994.
