Obelia medusae

Obelia medusae

Obelia looks like a very small filamentous plant but is actually a colony of tiny animals, also known as a hydroid. They are found frequently found growing on sea-weeds. The drawing shows a small y shaped segment of an Obelia frond, originally about 2 mm long. On the left is the many tentacled head of feeding organism surrounded by a delicate chalice of clear shell. On the right arm of the y is a larger transparent capsule holding ovoids which are released to hatch into a free-living, colonising form. Balsma Post cover, issue No. 28, July 1995. Simple pen and ink outline with shading to give some impression of depth, printed on light blue paper. Drawn from PMS box 91/28.
