Dover sole fish scale

Dover sole scale

Fish scales were favorite dry mount subjects for the Victorian slide maker and still create an impact today. This scale is shaped like an elongated rectangle with rounded edges, twice as long as wide. Concentric rings of finely spaced ridges radiate out from the centre of the scale. Superimposed on these ridges is a triangle with its apex at the scale centre down to the narrow bottom side of the scale which is comprised of radial ribs. The top of the scale, the part which is actually exposed on the fish surface, is decorated with five to six forward pointing rows of spines which increase in length towards the edge. This makes it immediately apparent why the sole skin feels smooth when stroked from head to tail but feels like sandpaper when stroked in the reverse direction. Pen and ink drawing printed on blue paper. Balsam Post cover issue No. 32, July 1996. Drawn from PMS box 93/40 by D T Richardson.
