Feather winged beetle

Feather winged beetle - Ptiliidae

There are apparently 19 genera with circa 90 species of these beetles living in Britain alone. They live in rotton wood, in leaf and vegetable detritus, fungus covered logs and some in synoeacy (a tolerated guest!) in ants nests. They can fly or drift in the wind with their delicately feathered wings (information courtesy of Natural History Museum). I particulary enjoyed drawing this speciment with its fractured asymmetric layout. This is the dorsal view reconstructed by careful observation and focussing as the actual beetle was flat and transparent under the slide. In Balsam Post cover, Issue No. 33, October 1996. Drawn from PMS box 93/24 by Keith Brocklehurst and printed on light blue paper.
