cross section of a grass stem

Cross section of a Grass stem

The hollow ring of the grass crossection has an outer single layer of small cells (the epidermis) Cell size increases gradually towards the inner edge of the stem. Within the ring of the stem are fifteen denser round areas with three larger cells within them, creating goggle eyed open mouthed heads. These are the vascular bundles through which nutrients and water pass up and down the plant. The eyes and mouths are larger xylem or water carrying vessels. Contrast these with the extremely large vessels in the clematis stem cross section on one of the other covers. Balsam Post cover, issue No. 35, April 1997. Drawn from a slide in PMS box 96/31 prepared by R M Farrington from an image projected onto paper and printed on a yellow background.
