Agropyron junceiforme

Agropyron junceiforme - Sand Couchgrass

This is a plan view of a cross section of the stem or leaf of the couchgrass. The blade is bent in a horseshoe shape with the ends of the shoe touching. The outer surface is smooth whilst the inner surface is convoluted into 15 lobes. Each of the lobes is covered in spiky cells. The 25 vascular bundles look like little faces as they form a ring around the stem. Compare this with the Balsam Post cover, issue 38, January 1998. Drawn from a slide from the PMS box 'Beginners Series Botany II' and printed on green paper.
