Flustria foliacea - Hornwrack

Flustria foliacea - Hornwrack

Walking along the tideline of Hunstanton Beach, you could find hundreds of these dried brown fronds of what one might initially think of as seaweed. A closer look at at about 30 x magnification reveals a mat made up of numerous tiny cells in which individual organisms live, together forming a large colony. The Hornwrack is actually a simple type of animal - a bryozoan. Balsam Post cover, issue No. 44, July 1999, printed on blue paper.
