Triceratum pentacrinus

Diatom - Triceratum pentacrinus

Diatoms are microscopic algae with silicaceous shells. This drawing with more depth was created from a series of pictures. At high magnification, a deep object such as this one is only in focus in a very narrow plane, so you might only see the detail of the pentacular base in one view and only the tips of the five arms in another. I took five pictures at different planes and also looked at the specimen directly whilst drawing. The original symmetrical shape was then drawn at an angled projection and the rendering built up. Balsam Post cover, issue No. 47, April 2000, printed on yellow paper. The sample was drawn from a specimen mounted by K D Kemp, in PMS box 96/22.
