Periphyllus testudinaceus

Aphid - Periphyllus testudinaceus

Looking at some maple leaves in early summer, I noticed some small dots scattered about the leaves. They turned out to be flattened insects, oval with a delicate row of flattened sculptured plates around the edge. They are pressed totally flat against the leaf and will only move when prodded or the leaf dehydrates. These are actually just one form of an aphid which has a more typical winged form at the beginning and end of the year. Balsam Post cover, issue No. 48, July 2000. Printed on blue paper.
