Guppy egg

Guppy egg

This drawing was made from a section of an aquarium fatality and shows a developing embryo. The central area of the yolk sac is bounded on the left by the head of the baby fish, the two eyes clearly visible in section as is the V of the brain. on the right is the cross section of the tail of the body which had been wrapped round the yolk sac outside of the sectioning plane. The oval cross section is packed with dense muscle tissues. The subject was quite large and I had to take several camera pictures to cover the entire area in detail. These were scanned in and joined like a jigsaw puzzle to recapture the whole view. This composite was then used as the basis of the pen and ink line rendering of the picture. A very simple way to trace outlines is to use a computer image, reduce its contrast and increase the brightness until the picture is barely visible. This template can then be printed on suitable paper or card. Detail can then be filled in by drawing directly from observation. Balsam Post cover, issue 51, April 2001, printed on yellow paper.
