House martin parasite - torymidae

House Martin parasite - Torymidae

This parasite came from a house martin as was part of the loan of slides from the Henley Museum Dartmouth to the PMS. It was labelled Stenopterix hirundinis but one of our experts, D T Richardson, tentatively identified it as a member of the Torymidae. It looks rather like the body of a house-fly but with long thin projections instead of functional wings. The specimen could not be viewed fully even under a low power steromicroscope. I therefore projected the slide using an old enlarger onto photopaper. The image was scanned into my computer, inverted to produce a positive print and then used as a template for the illustration. Balsam Post cover, issue No. 52, July 2001, printed on blue paper.
