Taraxacum flower head

Taraxacum flower head

For many years, John Nicholls produced many whole flower or fruit mounts for microscopy. The above is a transverse section through a taraxacum (dandelion like) flower bud. The oval bud rests on delicately curved leaves and sepals. Inside you can see the outline of the ovaries at the base of the bud, then there are the sections of the many flower tubes with anthers from which released pollen is visible near the top of the flower. Balsam Post cover, issue No. 53, October 2001. Again the picture was drawn from a computer generated template of a photoprint made by projecting the slide directly onto photopaper.
