Brilliant diamond

Brilliant cut diamond

Jewels, alone or in jewelry, are interesting objects under a hand lens or a steromicroscope. You can look for flaws within crystals, see the polishing marks on the facets and observe how permeable with little cracks emerald can be. The picture is of a 0.2 carat diamond cut to give a round 'brilliant' shape. A well cut diamond collects all the incoming light from above and reflects it back out again through the upper facets. If you cannot afford a diamond (mine was borrowed from a jewellers!) the buy a cheap piece of jewellry with a cubic zirconia stone to play with - it has similar properties optically and physically. Balsma Post cover, issue 56, July 2002.
