Fred Loxton,
editor of the Balsam Post from 1992 to early 2002, was happy to
take illustrations for the Newsletter on the following conditions:
The images had to be in 1 month before publication; illustrations
had to be in black and white (no grayscale) and without large
expanses of black; drawings had to be capable of 70% reduction.
Fred's readiness
to accept the illustrations I submitted played a key role in the
development of my drawing skills and how I perceived microscopical
subjects. Above, you can see not only a range of subjects taken
from the PMS microscope slide collection or from articles submitted
to the newsletter but also a breadth of techniques tried. From
simple line drawings, through drawing from projection, visualising
diatoms in three dimensions, reconstructive portraits, to interest
in shape and framing.
